Seiko arrived in watchmaking with the mindset to create a special segment targeted towards the Japanese watchmaking industry. This mindset has led to various creations and has broadened the world of watchmaking with Asian ingenuity. To further expand its watchmaking expertise, Seiko launched the Seiko Sportsmatic 5 in 1963, making it the first self-winding watch in Japan. Inspired by the Sportsmatic 5, the Seiko 5 Sports collection was launched in 1968.
